Spinal Cord Surgery

Spinal Cord Surgery:

The spinal cord is the longitudinal cord of nerve tissue enclosed in the spinal canal. The spinal cord is composed of 31 segments that are categorised as

Cervical 8, Thoracic 12, Lumbar 5, Sacral 5, and Coccygeal 1. These segments consist of 31 pairs of spinal nerves with their respective spinal root ganglia. Spinal nerves contain the motor, sensory, and autonomic fibers. These nerves exit through the intervertebral foramen, which is the doorway between the spinal canal and peripheral nervous system. It lies between the pedicles, which are connecting tissues of neighbouring vertebrae at all levels in the spine.

The most common issue that warrants surgical intervention of the spine is the pinching of the spinal nerves, which is performed to ease the pressure on the “pinched” nerves and/or the spinal cord, thereby stabilising the spine. Spinal Cord surgery in Bangalore at Srishti Speciality clinic

Procedures that encompass spinal cord surgery:

Laminectomy: A section of bone is removed from one of your vertebrae (spinal bones) to relieve pressure on the affected nerve.

Discectomy: where a section of a protruded part of the disc compressing the nerve root is removed.

Spinal fusion: where two or more vertebrae are joined together with the placement of an artificial disc or cage along with the pedicle screws in cases of listhesis

Kyphoplasty is a procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures by inflating a balloon to restore bone height and then injecting bone cement into the vertebral body. It is performed in the case of vertebral body fractures due to trauma or any other pathological fracture without cord compression.

Disc replacement: The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae that are stacked on top of each other. Discs between the vertebrae work like cushions to allow the vertebrae to rotate and move without the bones rubbing against each other. The disc replacement involves replacing a worn or degenerated disc in the lower part of your spine with an artificial disc made of metal or a combination of metal and plastic. It is a regularly done surgery that is performed under general anaesthesia and hospitalisation.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF):Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgery to replace a degenerated disc in the neck. The disc is accessed through an incision that is made near the throat to remove the disc. after which a graft is inserted to fuse together the bones above and below the disc.
