Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal Cancer:

The tube that connects the throat to the stomach is called the esophagus. Cancers affecting this organ are known as esophagal cancer.

Smoking, alcoholism, spicy food, hot drinks, and poorly controlled acid reflux are significant risk factors for esophageal cancer.

Symptoms include :

  • Trouble swallowing of Solid food and liquids
  • Unintentional weight loss,
  • Chest pain,
  • Worsening indigestion or heartburn
  • Weight loss.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Chronic cough.
  • Vomiting.
  • Bone pain (if cancer has spread to the bone)
  • Bleeding into the esophagus. This blood then passes through the digestive tract, which may turn the stool black.

Most people in the North Karnataka region are prone to esophageal cancer. 

What can be done?
People who have the above symptoms should consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated at the ear.

How are esophageal cancers treated??
Once diagnosed with esophageal cancer, a thorough evaluation and staging of the disease will be done, following which a multimodal treatment plan can be made to treat the cancer based on the stage and fitness levels of the patient.
General surgery and chemoradiation therapy will be used to treat these cancer patients.
