Loop Electrical Excision Procedure
A loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is a procedure where a heated wire loop is used to remove a thin layer of abnormal tissue from the cervix, for the diagnosis and treatment of precancerous cells (cervical dysplasia). It is a procedure recommended after an abnormal Pap smear or colposcopy, wherein a high-frequency electrical current is used to precisely cut and remove the affected tissue, which is then sent for testing.
The objectives of this procedure are:
➔To remove precancerous cells on the surface of the cervix, which can be a precursor to cervical cancer.
➔To treat cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), a condition of abnormal cell growth.
➔To treat early-stage cervical cancer.
➔To remove tissue for a definitive diagnosis, even if treatment isn’t immediately necessary.
➔To remove lesions, including some cervical polyps and genital warts.
