Obstetrics
Obstetrics is the medical specialty focused on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Thus, commences with conception to the completion of the 6-8 weeks postpartum period, a period where the body recovers to return of prepregnant state. Obstetrics is combined with gynaecology, a field dealing with the health of the female reproductive system, to form the specialty known as obstetrics and gynaecology (OB/GYN). This combined field involves both surgical and non-surgical care for a woman’s reproductive and maternal health.
What obstetrics involves
➔Prenatal care: Monitoring the health of both the mother and foetus throughout pregnancy with regular checkup and diagnostic tests including periodic scans.
➔Childbirth: Assisting with the deliveries. In cases of both vaginal or C-section.
➔Postpartum care: Providing care for the mother immediately after birth, monitoring for complications, and ensuring her physical recovery to return to normal activities.
➔High-risk pregnancies: Managing pregnancies that are considered high-risk, which may call for more frequent monitoring.
Obstetricians provide primary care, continuity of care, and surgical services related to women’s health.
Common procedures:
➔Assisted delivery:Using tools like forceps or vacuum extractors to assist with a prolonged or difficult delivery.
➔C-section: A surgical procedure to deliver a baby when a vaginal birth is not possible or poses complications.
➔Ectopic pregnancy: The diagnosis and treatment of pregnancies where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.
