Pelvic ultrasound

➔An imaging test where high-frequency sound waves are used to produce pictures of the pelvic organs.

➔It can show the size, shape, and position of organs and detect masses, cysts, or fluid.

➔It is considered safe and has no known side effects, though some may experience minor discomfort from pressure during the exam.

It can be performed in two ways

Transabdominal (external):

A healthcare provider applies a gel to the abdomen and moves a handheld device called a transducer over the skin. The transducer emits sound waves that reflect off body structures, to a computer where these reflected waves are used to create a picture.

➔Transvaginal (internal):

A transducer is inserted into the vagina to gather more detailed images. This method is helpful to get a more in-depth view of the uterus and ovaries.
